Standing at the edge, I peer in wonder, at the simplicity of how easily the end can meet me.
The end of worry, the end of fear, the end of anguish over why I’m here.
We need to believe that thought carries on,
For legacy, for love, everything we’ve tried to become
Image and memory, are not enough
To live and unravel who we are
We must, taste the blood, that accompanies the plunge
To dwell on breath that invokes the shivering invitation
To dine with the gods of oblivion
We welcome a curiosity unbecoming of reason
And yet I cannot escape the siren song of the great beyond
And the imagined peace that follows with
I hold no stance that I’ll exist, I hold no stance that I’ll exist in the unknown
All the same, I need to believe that I will still see
And I need to believe you will still think about me

Out there, amidst the smoke-filled shade,
Grow the roots of a menace mankind cannot contain
Condemned to the soil, friend to the worms
The darkness and our doubt its most vital allies
It’s the cold kiss on our cheek as we sleep
The downed limb that won’t burn to give us heat
The distant glowing eyes awaiting their turn to eat
We throw ourselves into this convoluted abyss
Seeking companionship in the dirt from which we came
In the muck and the mire we sit in reverie
Contemplating how to conquer fears and master wits
Traversing terrains to discover something to settle our insecurities
With a heightened sense of things
We whisper grievances to trees, seeking their wisdom
In desperation we sing with cicadas to decipher their hymns
We raise arms as sails to the sky
Hoping the wind will lead us to where we can fully live and ultimately die
Though I know too well, there’s no reason to be found in madness
Just as the fire burns fuel to ash for the breeze to carry to a new home
I realize, “all we are is dust in the wind”,
What is to come won’t save much grace for the likes of me
